If you have spent any time in a hunting camp, you know the topic of cartridges will always come up. Hunters share stories and opinions on what they have used and their favorites. What will also arise is the debate over which round is best. One person swears by the .270 Winchester while another insists the .30-06 Springfield still rules. Most of these debates create more noise than useful information. To the newer hunter, it can be tough to discern fact from opinion. Fortunately, there is now an excellent source of information to help us make an informed decision. For those looking for an unbiased and fact-centered source of information, I suggest Rifle Cartridges for the Hunter by Richard Mann.

Rifle Cartridges for the Hunter – An Enjoyable Resource
In this book, Mann does not attempt single out a “best” cartridge, but rather provides information on hunting rounds. The book is a hunting journal spanning a half-century. In 408 pages, author, hunter, and gun writer Richard Mann details 50 different cartridges he has used to hunt all over the world.

50 Different Cartiridges
Mann grew up hunting the hills of West Virginia and has spent a lifetime in the outdoors. His adventures have taken him to exotic locales, but he has always come home to write about them in his own honest, straightforward, hillbilly style. In this book, he does the same, helping you understand not only the capabilities of 50 different rifle cartridges, but the magic that can happen between hunters and some of the cartridges they use. The book is not a technical manual, but rather a collection of stories about hunting for animals as small as Appalachian tree squirrels to those as large as African buffalo in the Mozambique swamps.

Rifle Cartridges for the Hunter
Like many of you, I have spent hours in the pages of books on various cartridges. While informative, they were little more than a collection of dry specs. Rifle Cartridges for the Hunter is so much more than that, and I found it to be as enjoyable as it was educational. If you are a hunter, or even just a cartridge nerd like me, this book is well worth your time.
