I get asked constantly from guests in our show about what they should wear for their first fishing adventure. I also often get asked from experienced anglers on which fishing footwear I think is best. There are many factors and variables to consider and there may not be only one pair that can fit every need or every angler. Let’s dive in to some options and what to look for.

Your Adventure, Your Fishing Footwear

If you are fishing on a charter boat, a carpeted bass boat, a canoe or a kayak-your choice of footwear can vary dramatically. Even fishing from shore or a dock will change which option will work best. The first question I ask someone in return is what they are fishing on.

There is one pair of shoes that I will consider my go-to option for being on a boat deck. Whether it is a bass boat, charter boat, solo skiff or a row boat, I have one style of show that stands out as a great option. The Deck Boot from XtraTuf is a staple in the fishing world. Their sport option provides a 30% lighter option than their standard deck boot. These boots are non marking, great traction, slip resistant, 100% waterproof and a breathable mesh liner for more comfort and long lasting use.

It is tough to go to any marina full of serious fishermen and not see quite a few pairs of XtraTuf boots for a reason. These are a solid option for men and women while on any vessel. My favorite feature is their seemingly endless options for colors and patterns to really make your look as unique as your personality.

In The Water

what if you walk into the water or launch your kayak to paddle board? Like above, the brand XtraTuf has an option worth mentioning. They offer a Riptide Sandal that is slip resistant, ample drainage holes to keep water out of your shoes as fast as it comes in, high performance EVA and a few pretty cool pattern and color options. These are a low cost option for a one piece molded shoe that will keep water moving and not sit inside the shoe to cause bad odors and bacteria build ups.

Another brand to investigate is Astral Footwear. I personally wore a pair of their Loyak shoes for many years and people were always surprised that they were not normal tennis shoes due to their stylish look and how well they held up with heavy use. These shoes will drain and dry as well but may require extra care to ensure they are dry before bringing them in the house and spreading a foul odor. If you dry them properly, these are a great option for an all around water show that looks stylish and holds up with heavy use.

On Land

Now you have options for boats and kayaks, but what about a shoe that can handle being on shore or maybe in muddy areas around a lake. This is wear the famous Muck boot comes in handy for me. The Edgewater classic Mid boot has been a staple for me in my adventures in swampy, mucky or even mildly wet areas around waterways and trails. These boots are 100% waterproof, breathable and durable. Very durable. These boots are best for walking in shallow water, mud, brush or even shallow shorelines while keeping your feet dry and breathable. A variety of colors and options makes the Muck boot a solid outdoor option for footwear no matter the adventure!

Walking away

The best tips to walk away with here is that there are specialized footwear options for any adventure. You can use one choice for everything but you may destroy your shoes in the wrong environments or even worse, destroy your comfort in others. My Suggested option is to get the correct footwear for each adventure. I know I often get accused of having way too many shoes in our house, but each pair has a purpose and style for anything life throws at me. Do not be afraid to get multiple pairs so you are always prepared and go find your next adventure!
